I began this textile work with a composition of above-and-below. I created the leafy water’s edge with positive and negative hand-cut stencils, then repeated those shapes as reflections in the water. I also enjoyed contrasting my stitching patterns in the ”above” section with the liquid stitched patterns in “below.”

Living in Florida, this scene and these colors respond to the colors and scenery I enjoy at the nearby St. Johns River. All I needed to add to the scene were a few characters: the egret standing as sentinel, and a few fish darting through the leaf reflections.

The quilt includes a hanging rod and D-ring on the back in an attached pocket. It installs easily, hanging from a single nail or picture hook.
